Dr. Moran's Journey in Cardiology
Dr. Moran started his career in interventional cardiology at Harvard where he broke the mold and became a pioneer for how medical fellows in training become interventional cardiologists.
At the time, stents were a new technology and a lot of interventional breakthroughs were happening in the halls of cardiology. While finishing his training at Tufts University's western campus at Baystate Medical Center, he sought out an extra year of training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, one of Harvard's teaching hospitals, to learn from the world's finest, first hand how to perform these new procedures. Adding an extra year to your fellowship was unorthodox and so Harvard had no formal funding stipend for Dr. Moran’s training. In order to provide Dr. Moran with any sort of scholarship, the college decided to give him the position of Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation And Risk Factor Reduction. With a combination of late hours working ER and ICU shifts and his directing duties, Dr. Moran had his hands full but it didn’t matter. He was finding out all the intimate details of interventional cardiology practices that would later be taught as common practice. He was there when the methodologies were perfected for stents and other complex, coronary interventions.
All the while, on the same campus was the leading diabetes center in the country, the Joslin Diabetes Center, from which Dr. Moran learned about the in depth relationship between Insulin, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease. Not least of which was the knowledge of the detrimental effects of Insulin Resistance, or 'pre-diabetes' on the heart and blood vessels, making him a strong proponent of its comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. Getting to the central cause of cardiac conditions is what Dr. Moran is all about. Dr. Moran has a seasoned practice that is an outlier among his peers due to his willingness to continue to investigate and research, often "thinking outside the box" to establish an underlying and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan.
